NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING. In an article laudatory of New Zealand in general, the Syren, a leading London shipping journal, makes this reference:—"The shipping trade of New Zealand has shown a tremendous increase during late years. Thus, while the net tonnage of tlio oversea shipping entered and cleared at the various seaports in 1900 was only 1,070,907 tons, in 1909 it was 2,517,813, an inccrase, roughly, of about 50 per cent. This in itself is sensational enough, but if, in addition, wc take the coastwise movement of shipping, the result is even more striking. In 1900, it appears, the total movement of shipping, inwards and onwards, amounted to 13,820,008 tons, whereas in 1909 it reached the enormous figure of 23.978.004 tons, a rate of increase which 'is little short of phenomenal. It must, of course, be understood that when we speak of coastwise shipping, we do not refer simply to the pure coasting type of craft. . . . Curiously enough, the amount of tonnage actually registered in the colony is almost insignificant in extent. One would naturally suppose that with such vast quantities of merchandise flowing in and out of his ports the New Zealander would desire to take a hand in the work of carrying it, but apparently he prefers to let someone else perform that operation."
