MILITARY TRAINING.
STABLE BOYS' PROTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. About thirty jockeys and stable boys made a demonstration last night against compulsory military training. They marched up Queen street, singing songs, the leader repeatedly crying, "Are we going to be sojers?" and the chorus shouting "No!" and giving vent to a series of war cries. Arrived at the Drill Hall, where the Highland Rifles were drilling, the non-combatants formed l fours and marched across the hall, but the police putting in an appearance they made no further demonstration. The medical examinations are proceeding quietly.
From a letter reecived from one of the officers in camp at Palmerston North, it is readily gathered that the men are having a fairly 'busy time. On Sunday morning they were allowed to "He in" until 7.30 if they wished. Breakfast came oil ait 8.30, and church parade an hour later. Mid-day meal at one o'clock, tea at 5.30, and a lecture at 7 o'clock by Captain Cochrane, who urged the men to "play the game," and set a good example to the young fellowß now joining the forces. Squads were formed at half-past eight o'clock on Monday morning for physical training, and instruction was given on the parts of the rifle and the care of arms. Squad drill followed at 10 o'clock, for infantry training. A well-earned break came at 10.45, but at 1L 1.5 all were hard at it again in squad drill, rifle exercises, infantry training and musketry. At 2 p.m. squads were engaged in judging distance, and then followed instruction in firing position, standing, kneeling and loading; rifle exercises and infantry training.
