VETERANS.
To the Editor, r -
Sir—lt is a curious fact' that whenever a war veteran dies in poverty there is invariably an outcry from all parts as to the cruelty of allowing 6n'e of the country's defenders to die in a workhouse, qtc. It is so easy for pedple to , cry aloud and write to the papers about i tins inhumanity. Why is it that these | would-be philanthropists- do not take j, steps to form a league with branches i; all over the Empire and ascertain where and how men are situated who'have demoted their life to the military service !°f the country. ; Heroes are made of men who have served often but a few jmonths, but tlios'e who have served the ;best part of their lives in the.defence of the .Empire are often found in the workhouse or in poverty. .Instead of making useless outcries in the papers, let "those instead endeavor to find out where these old warrions are and in what circumstances, and take steps to. have them jrclieved,—t am, etc., SUAKIM.
