THE POPE'S HEALTH
CONFLICTING REPORTS. By Cahle—Pr«es AasowaMin—CopyrightRome, August 7. There are conflicting reports as to the condition of the Pope's) health. Doctors minimise the seriousness of his condition, but admit that a sudden slight relapse has occurred and that the Pope is now confined to bed.
It is now officially admitted (says a recent cable message to the Sydney Sun) that the Pope is really seriously ill. He is haggard and weak, and is greatly depressed in temperament. He can breathe only with difficulty—a phase of his infirmity that is greatly aggravated by heart trouble brought on by chronic gout. Professor Marehiafava, after consultation with the other eminent physicians in attendance upon Ilis Holiness, has prescribed "perfect quiet."
