DISTRICT NEWS.

OMATA. (From Our Own Correspondent). Mr. B. O'Dowda having received an appointment at Gisborne, the ladies of the Social Committee, Mesdames Clemow, D. Hooker "and B. Honeyfield, determined that he should not leave the district without some acknowledgment of the services he had so willingly rendered at any entertainment got up in Omata, act- ] ing as M.C., chairman, or in any capacity that would further the enjoyment of his friends. The usual social having been arranged for Tuesday, August 1, it was decided to make it a farewell social to, Mr. and Mrs. O'Dowda, and an invitation was forwarded to them. A large number were present, friends coming from Oakura, Koru and various other places, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. During the evening Mr. Edgar Bayly, on behalf of the ladies' commit- ' tee and the many friends of Mr O'Dowda, including himself, thanked him and Mrs. O'Dowda for the help they had always given to anything that was going on in the district. All were sorry to lose them, but wished them the. best of success in their new home. The small present Mrs. Clemow' was about to hand to them was just a little memento of the happy evenings they had enjoyed together. Mr. O'Dowda suitably acknowledged the gift, with which he and Mrs O'Dowda seemed very pleased. He said he regretted that he should not be with them three weeks from that night, as the "old buffers" were going to get up a dance, evidently to try and outdo, the ladies' committee. However, he wished them every success and as happy a time as they were spending now. If he made a fortune he would come back and spend it with his friends, and in any case he would look forward to seeing them all again at no distant date.

The "old buffers" (they christened themselves) are Messrs E. Bayly, R. Clemow, D. Hooker and B. Honevfield.
