THE BIG ROAD RACE

About twenty visiting competitors for the big road race on the 17th., and also the Waitara race next Thursday, from Hinds, Christchureh, Wellington, Wairarapa, (Palmeraton North and Wanganui have arrived in town. A number from Auckland and the East Coast are expected this, morning, and a (further contingent from the south to-night. So far as the secretary has ascertained there is only one doubtful starter amongst the sixty odd! nominators from outeide Taranaki.

The arrangements for the race are almost completed, and' the executive propose to again motor over the route within a few day* to confirm all arrangements. The feeding arrangements arc practically completed. Riders will carry their feedi bags with them from the start of the race. Sandwiches, bananas, chocolate and muscatels will be supplied', and hot milk will be supplied at Okato, Opunake, Ea;ponga, and Eltham. At Opunake and Eltham competitors will have to have their riding tickets checked. The race is to Ibe started at Burgess, Frascr, and Co.'s warehouse, corner of Ourrie and Gill streets, the limit men leaving at' 8.10 a,m., and the scratch ride, at 9 a.m. Every competitor will require to be at the Drill Hall not less ilian 30 minutes before their time for nbarting', when their cycles will be sealed, and l feed (bags and numbers issued. The race is to finish at the Recreation Sports I Ground

The Britannia Tyre Challenge Cup, valued at 50 guineas, which goes to the winner of the race, has arrived in New Zealand, and has been sent on to Christchurch for exhibition. This week it will l be on show in Wellington, after which it will be exhibited, along with the rest of the trophies, in New Plymouth. Good entries are promised for the" seven-a-side football tournament to be held on the Recreation Sports GrdlMid. on Thursday, 17th., in connection with the" race. Information as to the progress of the race will be communicated to the public in the grounds during the afternoon.

In the evening, a grand concert, organised by Mr. Renaud, is to be given in the Theatre Royal. The prizes wIU be distributed during the evening. The programmes for the race will be issued this week, and will be on sale ia all towns on the route.
