v.a.t.c. meeting. Australian" hurdles. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 6, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, August 6. The first day's racing of the V.A.T.C. Club'a Australian Steeplechase meeting took place yesterday. Results:— Australian Hurdle Race, of 1000 sots; 3'/ 2 miles (less 92 vards).—Arquebuse, 11.5, 1; Flash Jack, 9.0, 2; Minata, 10.5, 3. The only non-starter was Steam Anchor. Once settled down, Invermayson took charge. Minato went to the front before the turn was reached, followed by Bribery, Huntersdon, Yarrabar and Invermayson, with Arquebuse last. Excepting Steam, which displaced Bribery 1 from second place, there was little; change till after passing the judge's box i the second time. The pace quickened along the back, where Minato still led : from Obi and Yarrabar, with Flash Jack and Arquebuse lying handy. Minato fell back fit the- turn. Obi took command, but fell at the last hurdle, leaving Arquebuse in front from Minato, Flash Jack and Battery. It was a good finish, Arquebuse winning by a neck, two lengths between second and third. Time, 6min 52% sec. Received 7, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, August 0. Sunburnt and Britain ran unplaced in the Rosehill Flying Handicap on Saturday.
