THE PACIFIC ISLANDS.
MURDERS OF FRENCHMEN. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, August 5. Advices from New Caledonia state that a family of three (father, mother and child), named Devaux, have been murdered at Voh, and the bodies terribly mutilated. There is no clue to the perpetrators. Another tragedy is reported from the Island of Maewo. Two Frenchmen, Gerolino and Balca, were murdered by recruits on a vessel, and their bodies eaten. The crew of the vessel were afterwards killed. Kidnapping is given as the cause of the outrage. Details of both crimes are meagre. THE NEW HEBRIDES. Sydney, August 5. M. Martin, French Resident Commissioner in the New Hebrides, has arrived, en route for France. He states that affairs in the group are going smoothly, and there is no friction. He denies absolutely Bishop Wilson's charges with regard to the sale of liquor to natives and that justice is almost unobtainable where outrages are perpetrated on natives. ' J'.VU
