BRITISH POLITICS
"AN INFAMOUS CONSPIRACY." "SHOOT AND BE DAMNED!" By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 0, 5.5 p.m. London, August 5.
In response to Lord Morley's circular seventy-six Liberal peers have pledged themselves, nine will follow Lord Halsbury, and eight Unionists are willing, if necessary, to vote for the Government to prevent the necessity of creating peers.
A meeting of "Stalwarts" at Holborn and Chelsea passed resolutions supporting Lord Halsbury.
The latter, speaking at Chelsea, said he did not believe the people of England demanded the overthrow of their ancient Constitution. To do Mr. Redmond justice, he made no secret of his object, and boldly told the Government that unless they did what he wanted he would turn them out.
Lord Selbome denounced Mr. Asquith for advising the King to create peers and set up a despotism, in order to pay Mr. Redmond's price. History could not show a more infamous conspiracy. Let the Radicals create their peers, and thus bring home to the country the revolutionary nature of the procedure. Mr. Wyndham declared that when Mr. Asquith talked of creating 500 peers the Unionist party's answer should be like Lord Olive's to the cheating bully, "Shoot and be damned!"
Mr. H. Chaplin severely criticised the "Chamberlain-Halsburyites."
The Government has decided to postpone consideration of the Insurance Bill till the autumn session. The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows is urging that it be postponed until 1912, to give them time to consider such a complicated Bill. The Government's concessions to medical men has increased the friendly societies' opposition.
MEETING OF UNIONIST PEERS. London, August 4. Lord St. Aldwyn presided at a meeting of Unionist peers opposed to Lord Halsbury's action. Lord Cromer spoke, and the meeting decided not to attempt to organise a Unionist vote in support of the Government.
PAYMENT OF MEMBERS. Received 6, 5.6 p.m. London, August 5. Mr. Lloyd-George moves in the House of Commons on Thursday in favor of the payment of members at the vte of £4OO per year, members receiving <..riciiil salaries. •
