PERSONAL.

ABSTRACT OF NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.

The Mayor (Mr. G. Tisch) did not spend as restful a day yesterday ae he lias done since the operation, but at midnight there was an improvement in his condition, which, everyone will sincerely hope, will be maintained. A London cablegram leports the death of Dr. Gregory, late Dean of St. Paul's, at the age of 92 years. A Sydney oalblegram reports the deatn of Mr. W. 6. Willoughby, a well-known rifleman of Bisley team fame. The meeting of the Presbytery at Hawcra yesterday sustained the call to the Rev. Thomas Roseveare to the pastorate of St. Andrew's Church, New Plymouth.

The death occurred at Greymouth on Wednesday of Mr. Martin Shanahan, one of the oldest contractors of the West Coast, aged seventy-six years. He leaves four sons and two daughters. Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, will arrive in New Plymouth this afternoon to arbitrate in the dispute which has arisen between the Waterside Workers' Union and their employers.

The death occurred in Palmerston the other day of the son of the Rev. InnesJones, of Fcilding. The lad was operated on for appendicitis lately, the case being a very serious one from the outset. It is understood, saya a London cablegram, that Sir Charles Lucas is retiring from the assistant Under-Secretaryship of the Oolenial Office, owing to failing eyesight. It is probable that Sir H. Just will succeed him.

At Patea on Tuesday night the congregation of St. George's Church presented Mr. and Mrs. Gcrvase D. Hamerton with two Morris chairs, beautifully upholstered in old gold tapestry, in recognition of their services to the church for many years. If (remarks the Waikato Independent) a new seat is given to the King Country, it is announced that Mr. James Boddie, Mayor of Te Kuiti, will stand in the Opposition interests. If this opportunity is not open to him he will probably stand against Mr. W. T. Jennings for Taumarunui. Mr. Boddie was formerly a leading settler at Bltham.
