A NOVEL CASE
ABSTAINING FROM BIDDING. j By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A unique case, said to be the first of its kind in the world, was heard before Mr. Kiddell, S.M., to-day. Patrick James Murphy was charged with having, on February 28 last, at Wellington, offered to accept money as an inducement I to abstain from bidding as an Intending | purchaser of a license for Crown lands. I The penalty for the offence is provided in section (59 of the Land Act, 1908, at a fine of £IOO or twelve months' imprisonment. It was alleged that Murphy, who held the run adjoining that of Edgsir Spooner, met the latter outside the office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, when Spooner was about to enter to bid for the purchase of the renewal of the license of his own lease, and offered to accept £2OO to refrain from competing in the bidding. The cross-examination of Spooner was apparently directed to show a certain amount of personal ill-feeling between the two men.
