Th.o sequel to the recent case, in Which a young woman .was sent to gaoi for 21 days for having exposed her child in a manner likely to. injure its health, but was released three .days after in consequence ,of a strong pufilic agitation, was heard in the Magistrate's-.Cou/rt' today, wjhen Thomas Wells was adjudged father' of the child. Counsel, for defendant stated that his client had offered to marry the girl, and would do so now if she was willing. He, was not the unmitigated scoundrel some .people hod held l him out to .be. Wells was ordered to contribute 7s Gd a week towards the child's support.
NATIVE LAND FOR SETTLEMENT, Taijpo, Monday.
A Native named Ilonoreri Wtaakarehu, on behalf of himself, his. wife, and nine members of his fcwuily,,caused some sensation at the big Maori meeting at Waalii by presenting 130,988 acres .for the purposes of the Mana Committee in Various parts of the Taupo district. The block; contains, a, largo area of totara, lot and sulphur springs. A great deal of it is, first and secondclass land l and a largo area pumice country.
MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. Bloniliehq, Monday. On Friday afternoon a bottle -was picked up in Tory Channel contaißing the following message, addressed to a Timaru resident, ■ Mr. G. T. Johnston: "Boat capsized , three miles from Timaru." The discovery was reported to the harbor master, Timaru, -Who replies: "Circumstances correct; preserve Message."

WAREHOUSE THEFTS. Wellington, Monday. . Charles Seark, a young man, gave himself up to the police on Saturday, admitting being concerned in warehouse thefts for which several men were sentenced on Saturday morning. Searle was charged to-day with receiving a case of cocoa and a caddie of tobacco, the total ralue being £l3, knowing it to have been stolen. He was remanded for sentence on Wednesday. Bail was allowed. A WOULD-BE MARTYR. Nelson, Monday. A youth who, by his parents' orders, refused to register for military service through conscientious scruples, "paid the fine imposed, and is leaving New Zealand by the Tongariro to avoid compliance. ARRIVAL OF SOUSA'S BAND. Invercargill, Monday. Sousti's Band arrived at the Bluff in the Ulimiiroa to-day and was met at Invercargill Station by the city bands and afterwards officially welcomed by the Mayor at the Town Hall. The proceedings were enthusiastic. Mr. Sousa expressed high appreciation of the musical criticisms in Australia.
