MAGISTRATE'S RESIDENCE. By Telegraph—Press Asso«iuti*n. Masterton, Friday. For some tinie past dissatisfaction has been expressed at the fact that there is no resident magistrate here. The other day in Carterton a deputation brought the matter before Hon. T. Mackenzie, who promised to look into the matter, and said that as a general rule a man should reside where he earns his living. Public opinion here very strongly favors the compulsory rcsiI denct; of the magistrate. At present the magistrate (Mr. Reid) lives in Wellington. DEATH OF A NONAGENARIAN. Oamaru, Friday. Barney Winter, known also as Barney "White Rats," a nonagenarian, died this morning. The deceased was a very old resident here, and in the early days tramped extensively over the different parts of the Dominion as a showman, [ liis stock including a number of white , rats. DISSATISFIED BAKERS. Wellington. Friday. The Operative Bakers' Union, the members of which caused much commotion three years ago by going on strike, are making fresh demands, which will shortly come before the Con ciliation Commissioner. At present the wages range from £2 5s to £3; the. demand is for £3 ,<">s to £3 10s. HASTINGS POULTRY SHOW. Hastings. Friday. There are over 1100 entries in the Hustings Poultry Show, which was opened to-day. The judges are: Poultry, Mr. A. S. Palmer (Timaru): canaries, Mr. J. Thomson (Auckland); pigeons, Mr. J. Noble (Sydney). Mr. Noble snys the homers are the finest display he has ever seen. Judging is proceeding. Winners of championships: British fiame. F. Murphy (Wellington): Indian (lame, E. J. Cooper (Auckland), Competition was very keen.
