REGRET OF ALL CLASSES. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 14, 12.n a'.m. Cairo, July 13. News of sSir Eldon Gorst's death was received here with every token of regret by all classes, including the Nationalists.

. SOME REMINISCENCES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Masterton, Thursday., Sir Eldon Gorst, whose death has been cabled, was a nephew of Mr. F. G. Moore, county clerk for Masterton County, whose Vsister married Sir John Gorst. Mr. Moore resided with the Gorst family at Tc Awamutu just before "the Maori war hroke out, and worked under Sir John in the Native Department, over which Mr. Dillon Bell presided. Mr. Moore states* how trouble arose over the famous newspaper articles, how the Maoris issued an ultimatum, and hOw arrangements were made for the removal of Lady Gorst and children to Auckland. Subsequently ,Sir Eldon Gorst went there also, Mr. Moore and two others being the only Europeans left and surrounded by hogtile Natives. • The two others were the Rev.-Dr. Purchase and James Falloon, the latter being a half-caste, who subsequently was murdered. Shortly afterwards Mr. Moore conveyed dispatches to Auckland, and the Waikato became the arena of bloodshed.
