EGMONT (7) v. TATARAIMAKA (L)
The above match eventuated on tlio Tataramajka ground on Saturday in fine weather. Tatairaimaka were without the services of some of their regular players, and had some dilliculty in putting a full eleven on the field. The game, with the exception of the first spell, was decidedly alow and uninteresting, and calls for little comment. Egmont scored within a few minutes of tho start, and added three more goals before the spell ended. Tataraimaka note-had their only goal during this sj/ell, but were within striking distance on several occasions, and gave the Egmont backs a warm time defending. Play in the second half was mostly in the country team's end of the ground. Egmont added tlvreo more goais to their total, and if they had taken full advantage, of the many opportunities they had to score, the" tally would have been larger. Coals were scored for the winners by Osborne (4), Napier, Le- T pine and Charters, while Heligoland scored for the lasers. I
The sea-gull comes in for a good doal of adverse comment by reason of tlic havoc it works on farms at lambing time, when it picks out the eyes and often the tongues of weak lambs unable to protect themselves. At the present, time, however (says the Timaru Herald), sea-gulls are proving of some use on the light grub-eaten Hands morth 'of tho Rangitata, where they follow the plough and devour bile grubs in thousands. As showing the extent of the damage wrought by the grub, one settler in the Ashburton distHct Say* it will not be less than a quarter of a million. Over many miles of country the grass in field after field has been completely ruined. Perhaps the worst feature of Hie destruction is that many fields which have been ploughed and resown with oats and grass are now being attacked by the grub again. Fortunately this kind of thing does net happen often. A fawner in tlie Hinds district (where the grub is very bad) told a Herald reporter that/ this was the first time in 15 years that he had known the grab do any material damage there.
