OSSIPOFP. FAREWELL CONCERTS. Says the Melbourne Argus:—There is no doubt that M. Eugene Ossipoff has succeeded in gaining the ear of the Melbourne public, and the Athenaeum Hall was filled last evening at a farewell concert given by him prior to hw leaving for the East. M. Ossipoff has a voice of remarkable compass, and can take an A in alt. or a D down below with equal ease and vigor. He is refreshingly unconventional in his style, and always intensely emotional and dramatic, and his mobile and expressive features are constantly at work emphasising the points of his songs. He began with a Russian song by Tschnikowski, followed by Sargent's "Blow! Blow! Thou Winter Wind," of which he gave a suitably vigorous rendering. As an encore he added Sullivan's setting ol a pretty lyric, "0 ma. Charmante." His second bracket was made up of an aria from Verdi's "La Traviata," ' sung in Russian, and the. Toreador song from "Carmen," which has been his greatest success. As an encore a pathetic Siberian prisoner's song was given with intense and genuine feeling, and a further demand was gratified by the singing of D'Hardelot's "Because." Again and again if. Ossipoff was recalled, with every demonstration of delight and goodwill. M. Ossipoff will give two farewell concerts at the Theatre Royal on Thursday and Friday next, and, being a great favorite with New Plymouth music lovers, is sure to receive the reception he deserves.
