SOCIALIST'S GAOL EXPERIENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last. NigM. Mr. T. R. Cooke, the Socialist who waa sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with hard labor for non-payment of a fine imposed for breach of the city bylaw prohibiting public meetings ia Cathedral Square, was released to-day. Referring to his prison experiences, lie expressed the opinion that LytteMoß Gaol gives a man no possible chance of reforming. "It is a place for crime, imbecility and degeneracy," he said. 'lt would break a man's constitution up very quickly, and would shake hie reason. If a man goes in a criminal, he will come out worse than when la went in." He adds that as far aa Lyttelton Gaol is concerned the return effected by last session's Act ia infiniteßtiimal. He intends going to prison in regard to a further fine imposed on him for another breach of the same bylaw.
