THE SHEFFIELD CHOIR.

CORONATION MEMORIAL CONCERT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The matinee given by the Sheffield Choir was largely attended, and the programme given was very appreciatively received. The total takings were £5Ol 12s (id, half of which, £250 His 3d, constitutes the choir's contribution to the local coronation memorial. As this amount carries with it the Government subsidy of 24s in the £, the fund will be augmented to the extent of £550. In handing the cheque to the Mayor, Dr. Harriss gave expression to the great delight with which the choir, Dr. Coward and himself had availed themselves of the opportunity of contributing to the memorial. Ever since they set foot in the city, all had been treated with extreme kindness, and he was sorry the cheque was not for £2500, instead of £250.

The Mayor, in acknowledging- the gift, referred to the criticism with which the request to the choir was received, and said that both the motive behind it and the character of Dr. Harriss, Dr. Coward, and the members of tie choir had been misunderstood. The total net amount collected for the memorial now stands at over £IBOO.
