WRECK OF A STEAMER.
GROSS MISM ANA( i EMENT. By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Ottawa, July 2. The Spokane's passengers assert that the crew grossly mismanaged the rescue of those aboard. When the vessel struck the male passengers aided the women to escape to the boats. One woman gained the beach after leaping overboard. The other was drowned on board the vessel while seeking to escape. The previous report is incorrect.
The previous cable read: —The s.s. Spokane, which carried LiO excursionists, was run ashore in a sinking condition. Two women became panic-stricken and leaped overboard. Wireless telegraphy called the steamer Admiral Sampson, which rescued the passengers and crew. The Spokane is probably a total loss. One of the victims is Mrs. Williams, the wife of a Washington millionaire who made his fortune in African diamond mining.
