THE WAY BENEFIT FUND

ORGANISING COMMITTEE SET UP.

There was only a small attendance at tin; public meeting last night called to consider ways and means of assisting the widow and orphans of the late Mr. James Way. Numerous apologies, however, were received, and it was stated (hat many assurances of support had been received. Mr. <!. W. Browne, Deputy-Mayor, presided in the absence of ins Worship the Mayor, owing to illness. He referred briefly to the great assistance rendered by the late Mr. Way to various forms of sport in Now Plymouth.

Mr. McLeod said that every man who had been connected with athletic .organisations in tbo town knew that the late Mr. '-Jim" Way was a right-hand man—a man who was always ready to do the hard work, without looking for kudos and without aiming at "limelight.'' lie suggested that committees should be set up to promote entertainments to raise funds, and one scheme would be to repeat the Fire Brigades' juvenile ball. That matter, of course, would depend entirely on the ladies' committee. The benefit football match on Thursday last had netted between XOO and £7O.

Superintendent. Fred. Bellringer, of the Fire Brigade, voiced his own personal appreciation and the appreciation of the Fire Brigade members of the efforts that were being made to assist the widow and orphans of the late popular fireman who had been called away at an early age. He rather liked the idea of repeating the ball, and remarked on the very great success of the ladies' efforts in the function recently. Mr. E. Poekrill thought that, in addition to efforts of committees by running sports and other functions, subscription lists should he taken to propertyowners, who, owing to the cflieiency of our firemen, had such a sense of security and retired confidently to rest each night. He felt sure that there would be a very liberal response, lie moved that si central committee be set up to approach those interested. This was carried. The following committee was set up, with power to add to their nuniner: Messrs. (!. Tisch, <"!. W. Browne, J. McLeod, h. Hill. J. Elliot. 11. Southani, W. Sarten. F. 0. Rellringer, .las. Clarke, Juo. Clark, E. Dockrill, A. Boon, J. Roberts. K. ■lurv, J. Johnson, IT. 11. Ford. J. Pa lon, T. Buxton, W. ('. Weston, T. C. List. 11. Xtoeker. A. U Humphries, (1. Griffiths. D. Webster, E. Whittle. \\. Anibury, J. McKeiin, IT. Brooks, and C. ii. Weston.

Messrs. F. C. Uellringer, E. Dockrill and L. Hill were deputed to meet the ladies' .committee of the Fire Brigade ball, and Messrs. 'McLeod and .las. Clarke to interview the picture proprietaries in (]uest of assistance. These committees will report to a general committee next Tuesday evening in tne Council Chambers.
