DISTRICT NEWS.

OMATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Owing to the alterations in the boundaries of the borough abattoir district, the butcher (Mr. mly), who has supplied Omata, has had <his round curtailed.' We are extremely sorry to hear of Mrs. Clemow's serious illness. Enquiries on Saturday were more satisfactory, and we hope shortly to be able to report h*r on the high road to a complete restoration of health. .

A report was being circulated that measles had broken out in Omata and that some children from the infected house were attending school. On making enquiries into the matter the chairman found " the rumor entirely without foundation. One child had been slightly unwell, and the mother remarked "'perhaps she was going to have the measles," but she was only out of sorts for a couple of days, and was now quite well.

In former days it was usual for the members of Parliament to meet their constituents after each session and give an account of their stewardship, but now it is only on the eve of an election that the members consider it necessary to address their constituents. There are many subjects that need bringing forward, one of them being the pension to veterans: It is said the matter is to be brought before Parliament, lis it was last year, but what was done? The petition was forwarded to Sir J. G. Ward and quietly pigeon-holed. Is this to be done again this session? I am afraid so, unless' the executive of the Veterans' Association use a little more energy. While they hesitate and linger veterans are quickly passing beyond the need of pensions, for one seldom takes up a paper (never a weekly one) without reading of one more gone to the last home.
