ENTERTAINMENTS.
j SAUNDERS' PKTI'RES. There was a good attendance at Whiteley Hall on Saturday evening, when patrons were treated to one of the best series of moving pictures ever screened in Xew Plymouth. The star attraction, "The Fall of Troy" is a wonderful production. The aning is superb, the dressing gorgeous, while the scenery of the piece has that Oriental setting that, is always interesting and particularly instructing. The binning of the city after the siege is wonderfully realistic. In addition to the above subject, one named ''Scmirands" is perhaps the finest color film shown here. It depicts court life in ancimt Greece, and an interesting romance and tragedy are woven into the picture story. A subject that created a lot of interest was "German Dragoons." The Kaiser's Lancers are shown crossing over rough rivers in boats, their horses ¥wirrtpiinf. alongside. "Gold Mining in South AfricV gives one a good idea of the mining ;n that country. The comics are especially attractive, "Next Door Neighbors," ''The Big Drum," and "Calmo's Dinner Party," being exceptionally mirth-provoking. Every fisherman should see the ( film depicting "The Life of a Salmon." It is * subject full of exciting incident and industrial merit. Tne series will be screened to-night and to-morrow night, and what is a veritable treat should not be missed. The success of Mr. Saunders'cnefgy and enterprise is well-known to local residents and picture patrons. From absolutely a losing proposition the.pictures have been raised to a fine standard of education and amusement (at, a reasonable rate of admission) to the general public and profit to the indefatigable manager. To the success of motion pictures in New Plymouth win always be associated the name of Saunders' Biograph Pictures.
THE JOCK WILLIS-DAVE SMITH COMBINATION.
On Wednesday next we are to have a return visit from the celebrated Caledonian Entertainers, when they will submit an entirely new programme consisting of fascinating comedies, humorous monologues, musical gems, and the old, old songs.., A northern contemporary speaking of their performance says: "Waihj .playgoers experienced a most acceptable surprise at the.Miners' Union Hall last evening, wlien the Caledonian Entertainers presented their initial entertainment to a local audience. The Caledonian's came practically as an unknown quantity ; as a.company, but it is no exaggeration .to. -say that after their performs, 'ice.,,, last night their reputation should be firmly established in this district. Mr. Jock Willis, who is so favorably known as a successful interpreter of Scotch national songs-and character, also in. connection with the Pollard Opera Company, is to be congratulated on the very, excellent combination of artists he has marshalled around him. It is very doubtful Whether any company, embracing so much variety, yet not of the vaudeville class, could win so conclusively the plaudits and appreciation of an audience, as accomplished last evening by the Caledonians." The entertainment is styled "a nicht wi' the auld, auld sangs," and will serve to introduce Mr. Dave Smith, New Zealand's champion middle-weight boxer of the world, in a refined athletic display. Mr. Smith is well-known as the vanquisher of Papke, Clabby and Thompson, the American contingent, and will introduce into his portion of the entertainment the Wows and methods of attack used by them. The programme will include rope skipping, .ball punching, and shadow sparring, also illustrating the different forms of training which an athlete has to undergo to lit himself for a contest. The entire entertainment is essenced with a most delightful refinement of good humor, and can be witnessed by matrons and maidens, as well as the male persuasion, as there is not an objectionable feature throughout the whole programme. The prices are: 3s, 2s and Is. the box plan is now open at Collier's.
