A HOUSE DESTROYED. i By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. By a fire at 5 a.m. to-day a tenroomed dwelling at Papanui, owned and occupied iby Mrs, Eliza Smith, was totally destroyed, the inmates escaping in their night attire. The house was insured for £2OO in the Commercial Union and the furniture for £ 125 in the New Zealand Office. v , , ? OUTBREAK IN BISCUIT FACTORY. Dunedin, Last Night. An extensive factory owned by R. Hudson and Co., biscuit and confectionary manufacturers, in Castle street, had a narrow escape from destruction by Are this evening. The premises aro now being installed with a Grinnell sprinkler, V>it the installation was not quite complete. Fortunately, however, the manufacturing section, 'which comprises a large building in the centre of the company's works, and in which the Hie originated, was equipped with the apparatus, which checked the flames, which had a strong hold. The fire apparently started on the ground floor in or near the lift, and quickly reached the top floor, but the brigade got it under in good time. The origin is a mystery, there having been no fire in the vicinity of the supposed starting place. The damage is estimated at from £IOOO to £I2OO. The section affected was insured for about £OOOO, the main policy being with the Royal Exchange Company.
