TOO FEW POLICEMEN.
A GISBORNE COMPLAINT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day the subject of the understafling of the local police force was discussed at length, and came in for some severe criticism. The chairman pointed out mat there were only a detective-ser-geant, a mounted constable, and five foot constables to control a large scattered district, and a population of 13,400, while in two large main, suburbs the police were seldom, if ever, seen. The chairman stated that he brought the question up on his own initiative, and had not been approached by the ponce, but he considered it quite impossible for Scrgt. Hutton to administer the district with such an inadequate force. A stricture was also passed in regard to the lack of accommodation for constables at the barracks, thereby causing great inconvenience. The meeting decided to make urgent representation to Sir Jas. Carroll and the Minister of Justice on the matter.
