In the House of Lords, Lord Cromer's amendment to tlfe Veto Bill, to provide for a joint committee from both Houses to decide what is a money Bill, was carried by 183 votesi to 44. p DETHRONING THE COMMONS. THE LORDfMBfARNED. Received 29, 11.10 p.m. London, June 29. 1" the House of Lords, during the discussion on the Veto Bill, Lord Cromer emphasised the necessity of an impartial tribunal to decide what a money bill wag. Lord Haldane said the proposed amendment would enable a committee to control Parliament. It was impossible to separate the general policy from finance. Lord Loreburn held the amendment would, dethrone the House of Commons from an hitherto unassailable authority on ..questions of finance. Lord* St. -Aldwyn suggested that a committee, consisting of the Lord Chancellor, the Speaker, and the Chairmen of Committees of both the Houses of Lords and Commons, with a fifth person chosen by the other four. He merely declared that nothing would induce the Government to accept the committee. If Lord Lansdowne's proposed amendment were persisted in all possibility of an. agreement would vanish.
