EMPLOYMENT OF LABORERS.
COMPLAINT AGAINST THE LABOR DEPARTMENT.
By TWegraph—fr««s Association. Gisborne, Last Night.
| A rather unsatisfactory position has : arisen in regard to the employment ol Miorers on Government works in and around Gisborne recently, with the result that there arc a number of unemployed about town. It is stated that the Labor Department at Wellington is sending up men for railway works almost every week, and the authorities here are unable to give them work. Consequently the men pay their fares from Wellington to Gisborne with a promise of the Wellington Labor Department that they will be taken on at the railway works. When the arrive at Otako (the terminus) their services are not required. There are now, it is reported, about a dozen men in Gisborne who have been sent here'by the Labor Department, hut work cannot be found for them.
