MR. HARKNESS' SUGGESTIONS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Palmerston North, Last Night. Mr. J. G. Harkness read a paper entitled "The Old Lanu as viewed from <the new, in regard to dairy produce trade, being the result of investigations at Home on behalf of the Association." After giving comprehensive information, Mr. Harkness made the following suggestions: That the Government be asked to establish a properly equipped laboratory and experimental station, presided over by a competent and capable chemist; that the Government should be asked to approach the United States with a view to obtaining some concessions in respect to the heavy embargo at present existing against dairy produce, as there were there the elements of a lucrative and increasing trade; that advertising be clone at Home, the cost of which should be shared by the exporters as weli as their London agents; the adoption of a universal brand, "New Zealand Produce," with a registered Mimber for identification purposes, to re place the present undesirable multiplicity of brands from a selling standpoint; grading and maintenance of a high standard of exports. Papers were also read by Mr. J. Burt Vc-ale on the working of "a dairy tarm, and Prof. F. W. Kirk, Government Biologist, on diseases and pests in farmers' orchards and gardens.

GOVERNMENT!?? LONDON REPRESENTATIVE. STATEMENT BY HOV. T. MACKENZIE Palmerston North, Last Night. Thi» Minister for Agriculture, addressing the National Dairy Conference today, said the Government's representative in London would not clash in any v.-fiy with the Association's representative, who would attend to the commercial side, whilst the Government's representative would pay special attention to the scientific side, and particularly to the condition of the produce on arrival. He hoped in that way to prevent the systeii. of Home arbitration getting a footing as it had done in the meat trade, where he had seen disgraceful proceedings,_ perfoetly sound meat of standard quality being condemned by arbitrators and heavy charges made against it which entirely knocked out the marmn of profits. b
