THE STRANDED PELOTAS.

SALVAGE OPERATIONS BEGUN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Tuesday. Mr. T. M. Lane, one of the owners of the barquentine Pclotas, which is stranded near the mouth of the river, arrived in town laist evening and made a survey of the vessel's position from the (beach. It has not yet been decided whether an attempt will be made to get the vessel off, it being wholly a question of finance. The vessel, which is laden with hardwood, is settling down in the sand, though apparently no great harm has been done to the hull. There is no insurance on the vessel, though the cargo is covered. It has been suggested that a hole will be ,

made in the stern from which the timber will be salvaged. A start was made this morning to remove the top gear, sails, stores, etc.
