The rivers are rising rapidly, and serious floods are threatened in the eastern and south ; eastern districts. Already there have been several washaways in the railways.

At the inquest on the body of the. girl Young, who wa-s found outraged and murdered at Woodlupine, a verdict of wilful murder was returned against Smithson, the suspect, who was captured after a long chase. THE COAL VEND CASE. Sydney, June 20. In the coal vend case evidence was given that Victorian coal was more [triable and wasteful in breaking up than the Newcastle product. REFORMATORY SHIP CLOSED. Sydney, June 20. The training ship Sobraon will be closed as a State reformatory next month. Seventy boys will be released on probation and others aent to the State farms.

A Federal order has been issued that where any work is done by the States for the Federal Government, a minimum wage of nine shillings per day must be paid. KETCH DRIVES ASHORE. Sydney, June 20. The ketch Ida, timber-laden from New Guinea, has been driven ashore in Nelson's Bay, and is a total wreck. The crew escaped.
