Melbourne, June 17. The by-election for Bendigo East resulted iji an easy win for Uarnson, the Labor candidate.
DR. MAWSOX'S EXPEDITION. Sydney, June 17. In response to a suggestion by public meeting, the .Sydney Morning Herald has opened a subscription list for the Mawson expedition.
COAL HULK SUNK. Hobart, June 17. The Union Company's hulk Nelsosi, stationed in the river Tamar, sank with four hundred tons of coal.
RECOGNITION OF FORGER'S ABILITY. Auelaide, June 17. For having forged a cheque-for £l6 ft prisoner was sentenced to four years' imprisonment, the Judge remarking that it would be unfair if he did not in°some tangible way recognise the prisoner's skill and ability at deception.
