HUNTING

NORTH TARANAKI CLUB. The dub met at Mr. Gus Sole's farm oil Thursday in fine though cold weathei. Shortly after one o'clock the hunt began, and beiore long a hare was put up, but after a long chase the hounds were beaten by their opponent after a run of about four miles. After a short search another fine hare was disturbed from his lair, and after, being followed by"the" hounds and huntsman alone, was run to a standstill and killed after, covering about three miles. The next quarry proved too cunning,- and by a double back into a swamp put the hounds off, anil though its position was discovered soon afterwards it got away with such a start that the hounds had a long stern chase before a kill was effected. There were only two kills during the day, though there were about a dozen runs, in which the hares proved! too good for the hounds. There were a j couple of spills, but the riders were j not hurt. Mrs. and Miss Soile provided j afternoon ten, which was very accept-1 able after the toils of the afternoon, j Mr. Halcombe returned thanks on be-1 half of the hunt for the hospitality re- j eeived and gratitude -for the trouble I taken by Mr. .Sole and his sons in spar-1 ing the fences.
