FIRE IN WELLINGTON.
GOVERXMEN'T ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT. By Telegraph.—Press As-.ociation. Wellington, Yesterday. About one o'clock this morning one of the biggest fires experienced in Wellington for a considerable time broke out in the Government Railway Maintenance Electricnl Department. A few minutes after the alarm was given the whole building was in flames. Seeing no chance of extinguishing the flames, the brigade directed their main efforts to the attempt to prevent adjoining buildings to the north—the. Easson, but-ter-box Factory—from catching alight. Fortunately mere was no wind, and the box factory was saved. The Electrical Department was gutted. It had in hand all the electrical appliances for the decorations in connection with the Coronation. The Oovernment held its own risk.
The damage to the railway stores is estimate at between £BOOO and £IO,OOO. The contents of Easson's were insured for £o()0 in the London |md Lancashire office, and the machinery for £333 in the United Fire Office.
