CHEAPER CABLES
THEIR VALUE TO IMPERIALISM. Bv Cable—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne. June 11. Speaking with reference to the statement recently made by Mr. Millward. manager »f the Pacific Cable Board, that deferred cable rates would probably shortly be established as a worldwide fact, the Postmaster-General, Mr. Josiah Thomas, says he is more concerned in getting cheap cable rates for people who use them for social purposes than for those using them for business purposes. If cable messages could be sent throughout the Empire at sixpence a word it would do more towards binding the Empire together than any reciprocal treaties. Business people could pass on the cost of the cables to the consumers. This, however, was not the case with social messages.
