ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. Last Night, The arrivals in New Zealand from other countries during April number 2208. and departures 42(12. In the corresponding month of I'.HO the arrivals were 2201 and departures 4184. SCHOOL- STANDARD OF EXEMPTION. Wellington, Last. Night. Acting under statutory power which has been in existence for many years, the Education Department has decided that from .lanuary 1 next the standard ot exemption from attendance at primary schools will he raised from the fifth to a pass in the sixth standard. For many years the fourth standard was the highest which had to he passed to secure exemption, but in accordance with the steady tendency towards increasing the educational requirements, the fifth was adopted, and now the sixth has been made the compulsory point in the educational course of New Zealand children.
