The newspapers emphasise the fact that Emperor Joseph Francis is having an audience with King Ferdinand of Bulgaria. The tone of the foreign affairs' debate now proceeding in the Italian Cliamber is an indication that the Powers are viewing the situation in the Balkans with considerable anxiety. THE MIDRITES* STRATEGY. ...MSC'J? Consignment of arms. Received 8, 11.10 p.m. Cettinge, June 8. Under cover of an attack on Allessio a large consignment of arms was landed at Caperodoni and despatched to the Midritcs' strongholds.
Albania forms the south-western portion of the remaining immediate posses' sions of European Turkey, and extends along the western short of the Balkan Peninsula from the River Bojana to the Gulf of Arta. To the north it is bounded by Montenegro and Bosnia; to the south it is separated from Greece by the River Arta. The Albanians have been described as half-civilised mountaineers; frank to a friend, vindictive to an enemy. They are constantly under arms, and more devoted to robbery than to cattlerearing and agriculture. Of the 1,400.000 Albanians of the Ottoman Empire, it is estimated that 1,000,000 are Mohammedans, 280,000 members of the Greek Church, and 120,000 Roman Catholics. Rebellions are always breaking out, the last occurring about six months ago.
