DISTRICT NEWS.

TIKORANGI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There was evidently quite a flutter in the Clifton County Council's dovecotes on Friday last, whon the matter of rating occupiers of Maori lands came on. The subject was so ably dealt with in your leader column on Monday that nothing more need be said, except to refer to the attitude of resentment displayed by some councillors towards your Tikorangi correspondent. It will *not be out of place to remind theso councillors that the suggestion that the Council's obvious duty was to take a definite step towards securing the desired end by preparing a list of these "squatters," together with the propertiem occupied, with a view of their names-, being placed on the rating roll, cman--ated in these notes. This suggestioni the Council eventually adopted, and theassistance which, in this case, 1 waa> fortunately able to render, might surely have met with thanks instead of ingratitude.

A meeting of subscribers to the public hall was held last week, atid, as a result of the recent canvass, about. 40' new subscribers were secured. The officers of the new committee are Messrs; J. Yickery, L. Faull, and H. Alexander, who hold the positions of chairman, secretary ami treasurer respectively. The Ngatimaru Ladies' Hockey Club held an entertainment in the hall on Tuesday, Mr. J. W. Foreman presiding-.. There was a large attendance, andi about £7 was taken at the door, exclusive of that taken at the customary dance, which was held after the concert. Mrs. Barclay, Miss Vosper, Mr. Weston and Master Weston contributedsongs, whilst a little dot of verv tender years, Gladys Wills, recited "The Kitten" in a really admirable manner. The vocalists were accompanied in a.' most artistic manner by Mr. Weingott Two farces were staged, the first being "A False Alarm," the parts being taken by the Misses Andrews. V. Cunningham, Alice Alexander, and Messrs. Henry ami Harold Alexander, A. Wood, W. Territl, and S. G. Cunningham. Tho second, "The Matrimonial Agency," was acted' by the Misses Andrews, West, Wood, and V. Cunningham, and Messrs. E. Alexander, C. Wood, L. Lye, and 11. Cole. At the close of the concert. Mr. J. W. Foreman, on behalf of tbe club, thanked all present for their attendance, and also for the appreciative manner in which thev had received the various items. He also expressed tho opinion that if the members of tho 'lnh prove themselves as capable on the playing field as they had that evening oit the stage, then the Ngatimaru Hockey Club was bound to have a most successful season. Tho National Anthem concluded the conceit, and the room was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by Mr. W. Cole.
