FINE ART SALE.

COLLECTION OF OILB AND PAINTINGS. The collections ef oil paintings and pastels now on view at Messrs. Webster Bro§.' mart in Devon street are attracting much attention, as they certainly deserve, and they cannot fail to arouse the admiration of all who see them. They are from the brush of Mr. J. Douglas Perrett, of Auckland, and tkc people of New Plymouth are indeed fortunate in having placed before them this opportunity of selecting pictures which are of such a high standard of merit. In the absence of any annual , exhibition by an art 60»iety, these displays by artists of ropute are distinctly of educational value, introducing lovers of art to new methods of treatment a/nd now subjects. In the present collection, which includes many different classes of mountain and lake scenery and seascapes, Mr. Perrctt's "Mount Cook from Lake Pukaki" is the finest picture ot the Alps that we have seen. Painted in bold, free style, with a masterly grip of color effect, toe picture is ene which must command a great deal of attention from art-lovers. The snow is admirably i depicted, and the contrast of this with the sombre shades of the foreground k : extremely happy. The color effects, as I is usual with Mr. Perrett, are particularly mellow, unstrained, and the effect of distance and genonfl grandteur aaid loveliness of tke ; scenes arc well brought home. These remarks apply to the comparison picture, "Evening, Lmkc Te Anau," the beautiful sky, lofty, peaks, and shimmering water make up a scene charmingly and artistically depicted by aa artist whose color ccmcoptkms are of the highest order. "The Drop Scene, Wanganui River," and "The Clinton Valley," are also very fine pictures. Altogether, there is much, here to interest the folks of New Ply- 1 mouth, and the cordial support of the public is asked, so that the visits of artists of repute may continue, and evwn increase.
