Surgeon-Captain Faleoier, on behalf of South African comrades, also placed a wreath on the monument, after which Chaplain-.uajor Dutton engaged in prayer. Christchurch, Last Night.
There was nothing in the shape of a general holiday in the city yesterday. The retail shops were, in almost every instance, kept open, the intention being to take the holiday on Monday. Flags were flying on public buildings, however, nnd offices and business houses that commonly observe the half-holiday on Saturdays, were closed all day.
At Lyttelton, work on the wharves was virtually suspended for the day, and the shipping displayed bunting. The retail business, however, proceeded as usual.
