In connection with the resolution adopted by the Methodist Conference in referenco to Tattersall's sweep, the secretary of the conference has received a communication from the Colonial Secretary of Fiji stating that the Government intended to legislate against the sweep on the same lines as the Commonwealth, and also to prevent the postal service being used for gambling purposes.
FEDERAL NOTE ISSUE. Received 3, 12.30 a.m. Melbourne, June 2. The Federal Treasurer has received applications from the banks for another million Federal notes. He expects the total issue, will reach eigiit million by the end of the financial year. A WIRELESS RECORD. Received 3, 1.7 a.m. Sydney, June 2. The steamer Levuka claims a wireless record for Australia. Nearing Melbourne on her last voyage she wirelessed Suva, over 2200 miles away, but got no reply. Afterwards, however, they were informed that the messages had been received.
