PERSONAL.

The Venerable Dr. Cole is on a visit to the Taranaki Archdeaconry. A London cablegram reports the death of Mr. Felix William Spiers, ot Spiers and Pond, the well-known caterers. Mr. L. Hansen, of the Department of Agriculture, Dairying Division, was a passenger from Auckland by the Rarawa yesterday morning. Mr. S. 6. Millington, gaoler at the Terrace Gaol, and formerly of New Plymouth, is lying dangerously ill in a private hospital, in Wellington. The parishioners of Petone presented the Rev. J. D. Russell, who is leaving tor Oamaru, with a purse of fifty sovereigns on Thursday evening, "as a token of their regard. An Invercargill wire states that the Hon. R. McKenzie, who has been spending a few days in Southland attending to matters of purely local interest, left for the north by the second express yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. C. Carter left by the Rarawa for Auckland, en route to London, on the business of the Taranaki Petroleum Company. There was a big gathering at the railway station to see them off.

Mr. John Skinner has been appointed to represent the Clifton County Council on the Assessment Court in that district, Mr. J. W. Foreman was first appointed, but it was found that no member of the local body was eligible to act. After the racing at Epsom the King was given a banquet by members of the Jockey Club. The Queen dined with the Duchess of Devonshire, but did not remain for the ball owing to the death of Prince John, of Glueksburg, the King's great-uncle. The colonial Ministers and their wives were among the distinguished guests. Mr. H. E. Crust, at present flic Auckland representative for Mr. Bert Royle, of Messrs. J. C. Williamson, Ltd., was in town last week concluding arrangements for leasing the Theatre Royal for the purpose of providing New Plymouth with another permanent cinematograph entertainment. Mr. Crust will have associated with him in this enterprise Mr. Max E. Gjedsted, at present treasurer on the touring stall" of "The Whip" Company, which has recently concluded a most successful season in New Zealand. Messrs. Crust and Gjcdstcd have decided to thoroughly renovate the interior of the theatre before entering into possession on Julv 1.
