WANTON DESTRUCTION. LIFE AND PROPERTY. SULTAN WANTS FRENCH GARRISON. HEAVY FIGHTING. By cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received 1, 9.5 p.m. Tangier, May 1.
On the evening of the arrival of the French column at Fez, a detachment of the garrison under officers of the French mission destroyed the Lemta suburb ef Feb, burned the houses, and killed a number of the dispersing inhabitants. Eighty Lemta women and children were sold into slavery at the Fez market, the princes ranging from a dollar to forty dollars. The native papers bitterly protest against the Maghzen, and state that the Europeans previously promised the tribes immunity. General Monicr had a further conference with the Sultan, Mulai Hand, who I asked that 5090 French troops remain and garrison Fez and a similar number lat Mequinez. He declared that the ['withdrawal- of the'troops would be the signal for a revolution.. It was certain that neither Europeans nor the Sultan would remain when the French left. General Gouraud's column, with General Dalbiez's column, which went from Fez to assist General Gouraud, reached Fez on the 2Gth ult., after heavy fighting.
