In the House of Commons the Insurance Bill was read a second time after the application of the closure. Mr. Ramsay Macdonald advocated that instead of a worker paying fourpence, the State, employer and worker each pay threepence. Mr. Austen Chamberlain believed that voluntary contributions to the hospitals would decrease. He suggested provision for dentistry, and also for married women receiving deferred payments during the first ten years of their married life when the expenses were the highest. Mr. Lloyd-George, replying to Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald's proposal, said the extra cost would amount to three millions. He warned the House of Commons of increasing the national liabilities. He did not think the working classes fully realised the magnitude of the Bill. Many of the doctors' criticisms were based on ignorance.
