PUBLIC FAREWELL TO M&. CAHTER. A number of representative Winew men met in the Town Hall vesterday morning, at the invitation of His Worihip the Mayor, to discuss the matter of arranging a public send-off to Mr. O. Carter, who leaves on Friday for England to complete the sale of the Taraiiaki Petroleum Company's undertaking to the Oil Trust, Ltd., an English company. In his opening remarks, tht Mayor, who presided, said that MrCarter was going Home on business of the greatest importance to Taranaki. and it was only fitting that he be (riven a public send-off. He asked the meeting to decide what form the function should take. He moved that a publie meeting should be held on Friday afternoon and a presentation made to Mr. Carter from the citizens. Mr. R Cock seconded, and said that tliey all recognised Mr. Carter's good work in the town apart altogether from the ml industry. As the Mayor had said, Mr Carter was not fond of banquets or ol speeches, and he thought that a short function in the afternpon would he tha best. Mr. Ambury agreed, saying that Mr. «?£ Wa u ? v / bus - y m » n thi » week, and the whole function should be got off promptly. 6 Mr. Roy said that Mr. Carter was not fond of the "limelight," and he would appreciate the hearty handshake more than any amount of entertainment and speeches. It was decided to invite the public to attend a meeting in the Council Chambers on Friday afternoon at four 0 dock to wish Mr. Carter good-bye, and the Mayor and Mr. Cock were deputed to purchase a suitable souvenir, preferably one that would be of use to him on the voyage.
