KING'S BIRTHDAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. A big meeting of business men decided to-night not to recognise the Holiday; Association's decision to observe the King's Birthday on Saturday, but to, close their premises on Monday. Invercargill, Last Night. There has been considerable controversy locally in regard to the observance of the King's Birthday, but at a meeting of the Retailers' Society to-night, it was decided to observe Saturday, so that on that day all classes of Invercargill community will celebrate, < TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL. Timaru, Last Night. The High School Board to-day adopted a scheme for building a new boys' school and adding an agriculture course, the two things being mutually' dependent. The Board will also ask the Education Board to adopt agriculture as an optional subject in lieu of a langtfafee subject in senior scholarship examinations. The building is to he erected of the revenue, and the Government will be asked for a grant. , '''' CHRISTCHURCH ITEMS. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of the City Council tonight, an offer was received from Wilson's estate of £4OO for the erection of two memorials fronting the triangle block in the centre of the city. The offer was accepted. The Mayor's street construction scheme, to cost £IOO,OOO, was shortly discussed, and the matter postponed for a fortnight for further consideration. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's levy on the city for the coming year shows an increase of £2OOO, caused by the extensive building programme adopted by the Board. Comment was made on the extensive powers possessed by the Hospital Board to make levies, and the matter was referred to the finance committee.

WAIHI RESIDENTS INDIGNANT. Waihi, May 27. Intense indignation is felt in Waihi at a statement reported in the Southland Times, Invercargill, as being made by Mr. 0. H. Poole, M.P., at a no-llccnse rally on Sunday last. The statement was to the effect that at >ne time Waihi was a queer place and it was not safe for a woman to walk in the strcetW there. The assertion is considered to be a gross aspersion on the men it the town, and old residents characterise it as absolute fiction.

A STREET MELEE. Wellington, Monday. Shortly after ten o'clock on Saturday night a sailor from the steamer Divyton Grange created a disturbance outside the Terminus Hotel, at the corner of Taranaki street, and another behaved "similarly outside the Manners street police station. A crowd collected and the men were arrested. During the melee Constable H. Shaw was so severely kicked that he was unable to leave his bed yesterday. When the police got their charges to the watch* house one of them attacked Detective Hammond, biting him on a hand and thigh.
