(From Our Own Correspondents.) I EG MONT VILLAGE. j The long-looked-for visit of Professor Stagpoole and his colleagues to our local Boxing Club eventuated on Monday. There was a large attendance. The fighting men of the Kexv Plymouth contingent consisted of Messrs. Maxwell, Lnngdon, Lovegrove, and Professor Stugpoole, each of whom donned the gloves at least twice against local men and gave exhibitions of clean boxing and smart sparring, Lovegrove's exhibition in particular being heartily appreciated and warmly applauded. The bouts consisted of two rounds of three minutes each, and the fun was kept up till 10.30, when the hat was taken round on behall of the club. The public responded liberally, and the evening should result in a good profit. Mr. G. F. Dewhirst, president, on behalf of the club thanked the New Plymouth members for coming out and extended to tliem a hearty welcome. Mr. Stagpoole replied, and said inter alia that if the 'club cared to nominate, say, six members to compete at the forthcoming tourney he had 110 doubt that the Boxing Association would give a trophy to the winner. Mr. Stagpoole was warmly applauded for his magnanimous offer. The New Plymouth visitors were then given three cheers in a most convincing manner, after which supper was partaken of. A special word of praise in this connection is due to Mr. G. Foster (vice-president), who was indefatigable in his efforts for the success of the gathering. His efforts were all the more appreciated seeing that the committee were more or less engaged. So far as entertainments go, the Village has been very dead up to the present this winter. The Cribbage Club! has fallen out of existence. The euchre parties run last year were not a marked enough success to induce the committee to carry them on again this season, and all that is left is the Debating Club, which is still a marked success, and the Boxing Club, which is gaining strength every week and promises to become ' very popular. The fortnightly meeting of the Debating Society was held on Thursday, but owing, doubtless, to the rough weather, only eleven members put in an appearance. Mr. S. Carter was voted to the > chair. The programme for the evening was a debate, "Is Stratford the most suitable junction for the proposed Opunake railway?" Mr. A. Morton opened in the affirmative, being supported by Mr. F. Dewhirst and Mr. N. S. James. Mr. Foster argued the negative side of the question, followed by Messrs. E. and G. 1". Dewhirst. A map was produced to strengthen the, arguments. A most spirited debate eventuated, each speaker ill turn throwing, some new light on the subject. The vote resulted in a victory for the negative sklij by 0 to 5. During the evening Air. L. James was elected a member of. the society. The programme for the next evening will be readings and recitations from various authors specified by the committee.

The night was beautifully, fin^,'and a large crowd was present, although perhaps not so many as the comjmittec had expected and provided for. During the evening several songs were. sung. At half-past ten sharp all the guests adjourned to* the schoolhnuse, which had been kindly placed at the committee's disposal by Mr. Thomas, schoolmaster. Here the table had been beautifuly laid out, and spread with all good things, the menu consisting of roast chicken,'ham, tongue, and lamb, and dessert, with pastry of every description.
