NEW PLYMOUTH (8) v. WAITARA (0) Tho Taranaki Hockey Association fixtures commenced yesterday, the light rain which fell during the afternoon not interfering with the games to any extent. New Plymouth journeyed to Waitara, and were successful in defeating the local team, after a good game. The Waitara ground is not an ideal one for hockey, but a vast improvement could be effected by having the grass mown. The New Plymouth men were superior in all departments, and kept play in their opponents' territory most of the time. The forwards showed good combination at times, some of the goals being the result of nice combined play. The Waitara men showed an improvement in their play, several of them doing well individually, but lack of combination told against them, and they should learn to keep their places on the field. Their defence was very sound at time, the goal-keeper, especially, bringing off some fine "saves." Goals were scored for the winners by Patou (3), Perry (3), Charters and King. A LADIIS' MATCH. Waitara and Inglewood ladies' clubs played a drawn game at Inglewood, neither side scoring. Mr. Rolston was referee.
