FARM AND DAIRY

THE LAST WORD-ONE COW TO THE ACRE. One of the speakers at the laying of the foundation-stone of the new factory at Kaupokonui said he was informed that the land in the district would carry a cow to the acre (says the Dairyman). The speaker then waited for the applause ; that he know would follow this statement, which, in his opinion, was the last word in dairying. But what would the speaker say to land that feeds two cows to the acre, which is what one farmer does in the poor north. But even two cows to the acre is far from the "last word." The record per acre at Kaupokonui is £ll. per annum for milk, but this is really a very poor record, though it is the best we know of in New Zealand. Tne world's record is four cows to the acre, and is held, or rather was held, ! by an English iraoler, who some thirty ! years ago exhibited at one of the Royal Shows a fine cow that was fed exclusivelv on the produce from one quarter acre, i Of course, this means very intense cultivation, and stalling, lmt it is the way to get the most money out of cows. •Suppose, for example, that the farmer at Manaia, who holds the record of £ll. had stabled the cows and used the wnole of his thirty-two acres for growing fodder crops, he could easily have kept 48 cows, instead of 24, and his income then, instead of being £360 cash for milk from the factory, would have been rather more than twice that amount. This method of dairying is known as the soil-1 ing system.
