Mr. F. M. SUmlish has been appointed commissioner for the Tarata school district. j Mrs. S. Cameron has been appointed' teacher of the Oukura school, as from July Ist next. A Wellington wire states that Mr. T. K. Mac Donald has resigned his position as a member of the Legislative Council. Mrs. Wm. l'ratt, an early settler, died at Christchurch yesterday at the age of 83. She came to Nelson in 1843, and to Canterbury in 1857. Captain F. D. Seaborne, of the steamer Cranley, who was admitted to a private hospital in Wellington when the vessel arrived from New York in March, died yesterday morning. He was 52 years of age, and leaves a widow and two children in Bristol, England. Mr. Alfred (Jox, who represented Heathcote in Parliament from 1803 to 1805, and Timaru from 18(i0 to 1808, died in Christchurch yesterday. He was 80 years of age. He had land in South Canterbury and the Waikato until twenty-five years ago, when he retired. He was editor of ''Men of Mark in New Zealand."
