LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A parcel which was delivered yesterday to this office was addressed to "Currie street, New Plymouth, N.S.W., Australia." The Education Board, not being interested directly in the matter, has decided not to support the continuous telephony movement in New Plymouth. Schools in the Taranaki education district may be closed, at the discretion ot the committees, on June 9th next, to enable children to attend the Taranaki winter show. The Agricultural Society gratefully acknowledge receipt of £5 from the Hon. Oliver Samuel to be allocated to any section of the forthcoming winter show the committee may think lit. The Education Board frequently has "gems" in its correspondence. Here is a brilliant example: "The householders' meeting passed off successfully, but owing to the weather being so rough the householders did not turn up, and the old committee Were all returned with the exception of two."

A meeting of the provisional committee set up recently in connection with the formation of an egg circle in New Plymouth was held last night. A set of rules was drafted and a co-operate working scheme formulated to submit to a publie meeting, if a canvass of the district to be made reveals that sufficient support to run the circle is forthcoming.

Empire Day is on the list of authorised school holidays. Yesterday was Empire Day, but the Central school was conducted as usual, the intention being, it is stated, that a holiday should be given to-morrow in its stead. This, however, is contrary to the Education Board's regulations, which do not permit of such substitutions or interchanges without the board's consent. The matter will probably be discussed at next meeting of the board. A New Plymouth contractor had some concrete rollers to make recently and he secured some gravel that had been taken out of an oil bore at a depth of about 1200 ft. He mixed the material and filled the rollers, but a few days later found that the concrete had not set, the petroleum seeming to counteract the effect of the concrete. He was obliged to go to the trouble and expense of making new material, using this time, however, ordinary gravel. Last season the committee who took charge of the harbor reserve at Fitzroy planted a number of trees close to the beach by way of experiment. The trees have nearly all taken root, and promise to start into growth this spring. As the committee is desirous of doing more planting, a working bee is to be hekl this afternoon to get more ground ready, so that the plants may have all the rainy season in which to become acclimatised to the sandy situation. It is needless for us to say that anyone willing to help will be cordially welcomed. The weekly session of the Egmont Lodge was held last evening and was very well attended. It was reported that Sister Miss Grimley, of Leicester, England, would arrive in Wellington on June 15, and commence mission work in Blenheim, and then Nelson, after which she will come to New Plymouth for the opening of the new hall, and will conduct a four-weeks' Templar mission in Taranaki. A vole of thanks was passed and ordered to be sent on to Bro. A. f). Adams, of Dunedin, for his splendid reply to Professor Salmon's pamphlet. Impromptu speeches filled in the remainder of the evening.

"If I were married I would have every comfort, and would have a far bettor chance to get on in every way," wrote a lmckblocks teacher to the Education Board in applying for a residence. He was prepared to marry at once if he could have a house erected, he said, and the lamenting bachelor complained that he had to live in a house where tlx? other boarders made too much noise and interfered with his studies. He even had another man in the same room as himself. A lady teacher who was making a similar application complained that in her present home they "talked too much," and she could not study.

A meeting of members of the Park Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was held in the Town Hall last night. Mr. Rtuld presiding. The secretary presented a statement of accounts showing that the club had incurred a heavy liability for the making of the five lawns, erection of clubhouse, planting, etc., and a determined effort must be made to raise funds. The committee had engaged the Theatre Royal and made preliminary arrangements for a grand Imperial concert to be held on Coronation night, and that a good programme would be given, including a set of Imperial living pictures by very favorable arrangement with Mr. 0. H. Saunders, of the Biograph Pictures. Members undertook to do their utmost to make the concert a success. The chairman reported that the lawns had been splendidly top-dressed and resown, and the prospects for next season were excellent, it being stated that many tennis and croquet members intended joining the ranks.

The West End Bowling Club held another of its progressive euchre parties in the West End gymnasium last even ing, it proving a great success. There was a record attendance, 25 tables being occupied. Out of 17 games played, Misses N. Mills and 0. Iloskin tied for the ladies' first prize (with 13 games), and in the play-off Miss Mills secured first prize, and Miss Iloskin second. Messrs. D. Reardon and N. Norris tied (with 14 games) for the gentlemen's first prize, Mr. Reardon eventually winning in the plav-off, Mr. Norris securing second.. The ladies' first prize was a quarter ton of coal delivered by a local dealer to the winner, the second being a half-hundredweight of flour. The gents' first prize was a silver-mounted tobacco pouch, and the second a set of military brushes. A splendid supper was served by the ladies' committee, and was done full ju-fice to. An addition to the programme of the club's next euchre party will he dancing, which will follow the card playing.
