INTENSE COLD
UNPLEASANT RAILWAY JOURNEY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland. Monday. Passengers by Saturday's Main Trunk express from Wellington to Auckland suneied much discomfort on the journey, owing to the Railway Department putting on an ordinary flrH-elass carriage instead of the usual steam-heated ones that me run on the Main Trunk lin«. After leaving Ohakunc, in the upper levels, the air was very chilly, and those who were unfortunate enough to travel in the ear in question found the journey very unpleasant, especially during the early hours of Sunday morning, when the cold was intense. Certainly chemical footwarmers were put in at the commencement of the journey, but instead of being renewed at Ohakune, they were allowed to remain, and, consequently, became cold when they were most needed. • Remarks were heard on all sides regarding the neglect by the Department of the travelling public. Further, there wu only one first-class non-smoker besides the two sleepers on the train, and women were forced to sit in a smoking-car all night. The train was well-filled.
